From Car Clinic to Lifeline: Dr. Hebbi Sunil Kumar’s Journey from COVID Crisis Hero to Champion of Free Healthcare
What began as a one-man mobile COVID clinic has grown into Maatru Siri Foundation—a network that has treated over 1.2 lakh patients for free. Dr. Hebbi Sunil Kumar’s mission continues to inspire a generation of caregivers.
Bengaluru | July 12, 2025:
In May 2021, as India grappled with the deadly second wave of COVID-19, a Bengaluru doctor quietly transformed his car into a mobile clinic—armed with nothing but basic medicines, an oxygen concentrator, an ECG machine, and an unbreakable will to serve.
That doctor was Dr. Hebbi Sunil Kumar.
Years later, that act of courage and compassion has evolved into a full-scale healthcare movement—Maatru Siri Foundation®, a non-profit that has so far treated over 1.2 lakh patients completely free of cost. What started with WhatsApp consultations and car-side checkups is now a beacon of hope, offering comprehensive medical care to those who can't afford it.
The COVID Years: A Car Becomes a Clinic
In May 2021, at the peak of the pandemic, Dr. Hebbi was working the night shift at the BBMP Covid Clinic. Every morning, after a brief rest, he would resume work—not in a hospital, but in his car. Responding to hundreds of WhatsApp messages and phone calls daily, he would visit senior citizens, isolated patients, and those with mild symptoms who couldn’t reach hospitals.
“Every day I got 100–150 calls. I would treat what I could over video calls, but for the serious ones, I had to go in person,” Dr. Hebbi had said back then.
Though he didn’t wear a PPE kit, he followed rigorous safety protocols while navigating the locked-down city, delivering critical care out of his humble hatchback. His car carried first aid supplies, an oxygen concentrator, ECG machine, and his lifelong conviction that every life mattered—rich or poor.
The seeds of this mobile mission were sown even earlier. In 2010, Dr. Hebbi saved an accident victim using the first-aid kit in his car. That experience changed his outlook forever. He made a vow that day to always carry medical supplies and be ready to serve wherever needed.
A Foundation is Born: Maatru Siri
Today, Dr. Hebbi Sunil Kumar is no longer working alone. His foundation—Maatru Siri Foundation®— now has a network of hundreds of doctors across Karnataka who offer free healthcare services under its banner. Patients from all walks of life, many from remote regions and marginalized communities, have benefited from this mission of mercy.
Dr. Hebbi remains the same humble, grounded man—still not driven by fame, still not seeking fortune. Having once walked away from a lucrative corporate hospital job, he has instead chosen a life of seva (service).
“What I saw in him back then was just a degree and innocence,” says a close associate. “But today, he is an institution. A movement.”
From setting up mobile camps to mentoring youth, from emergency response to building networks of care, Dr. Hebbi has reshaped how grassroots healthcare can be delivered—with empathy, commitment, and unwavering resolve.
A Model for the Future
The impact of Dr. Hebbi’s journey is far-reaching. Not only has he inspired hundreds of doctors to join his cause, but also awakened a new wave of socially committed professionals who now believe that one person can make a difference.
His story is now studied in public health circles, CSR forums, and civic platforms as a living example of healthcare humanism. His foundation is currently working on expanding its services to remote districts, while also offering mental health support, telemedicine, and rural health camps.
An Inspiration
From a doctor on call to a doctor for all, Dr. Hebbi Sunil Kumar’s life is a testament to what selfless service can achieve. In a country still struggling to make healthcare affordable and accessible, he offers a blueprint—simple, sustainable, and deeply humane.
In the end, what remains is not just the patients healed, but the lives inspired—and a legacy of care that continues to grow.
